Pesaro — the birthplace of the composer Gioachino Rossini, a city with a rich history, located in central Italy, in the Marche region, 40 km south of Rimini.
The ancient Roman city of Pisaurum was founded in 184 BC on the territory of the ancient, mysterious Picene people. After the fall of Ancient Rome, the city was completely destroyed by the Goths in 539 and rebuilt by the Byzantine Empire, becoming part of the maritime Pentapolis of the Exarchate of Ravenna.
During the Middle Ages, the city flourished, and its surroundings were surrounded by magnificent castles. The great and powerful Malatesta invited renowned masters to their court and built three magnificent Gothic churches. During the Sforza era, the Renaissance Ducal Palace, the Imperial Villa, and the Costanza Fortress were built in the city center, all with the help of the great Renaissance architect Luciano Laurana. During the reign of the Della Rovere family, Pesaro became the capital of the Duchy of Urbino, ushering in the golden age of its glorious history: the era of Guidobaldo della Rovere's friendship with the great artist Titian, the patronage of Torquato Tasso, and the flourishing of Pesaro majolica.
Pesaro Pesaro is one of the most striking witnesses to centuries of theatrical life. It was the birthplace of the outstanding Italian composer Gioachino Rossini—the embodiment of a love of life in music, the author of brilliant aphorisms, and an endless gourmet in life. Every August, Pesaro hosts the international Rossini Opera Festival, an event of the same caliber as the Salzburg and Bayreuth festivals.
