Holiday home in Tuscany

Siena Clay is an area of Tuscany south of Siena, famous for its lunar landscapes and vineyards. This is exactly the view that opens from the top of the hill on which the old farm is located, which recently found new life and new inhabitants. The oldest masonry here dates back to the 2nd century AD, and a small chapel next door was erected in the 6th century.

The owners of the farm were very sensitive to its history: when they started repairs, they did not demolish anything. On the site of the once collapsed part of the house, the owner, an architect by training, designed an extension, which he and his wife call in German Wunderkammer (“Wonder Room”). This place is used for reading and contemplation - from the large windows you can see a truly wonderful panorama: the surrounding hills are beautiful not only in summer, in autumn and winter they are reminiscent of the “tactile collages” of the artist Alberto Burri.

“We wanted to carry out a complete restructuring inside the house itself,” says the owner. “We have planned several new areas that meet the needs of our family.” On the ground floor there is a reception area, a reading room, a dining room, a library, a kitchen and a study.

On the second floor, they created their own “cluster” for each family member, consisting of a small living room, bedroom and bathroom.

“This is not a house for social gatherings,” says the hostess. “We come here to relax, spend time with our children and nephews, and be in nature.”

It was the specifics of the local landscape that influenced many decorative decisions. The walls are painted a soft green, reminiscent of the fields surrounding the house.

The materials used in the renovation were exclusively natural: stone, clay, wood, metal. There is very little furniture and accessories, but they were selected with special care: some were made to order by artisans from the city of Arezzo, others were purchased in vintage stores throughout Europe.

“We didn’t want to clutter the house with things,” explains the owner. – We tried to choose only something special. Thanks to this, the house is spacious, and when we open the doors on the ground floor, a suite of several rooms is formed.”

At the request of the owner, a garden appeared on the farm. Previously, people visited here only occasionally, so there was not much vegetation around the house: an old mulberry tree and three cypress trees next to the chapel. A new scheme for home owners was developed by English landscape designer Gina Norton. She planted a small orchard, delimited by rows of artichokes. In addition, Gina planted hedges and an avenue of olive trees that leads from the house to the area behind the pool. Several poplars were placed here, and with the same respect for the landscape: they do not block the view.
