The beauty of these places has long attracted Roman emperors, counts, princes, writers, poets, and artists. It&#039;s no coincidence that the Pope&#039;s summer residence is located in the Castelli Romani. Romans themselves come here to escape the summer heat and indulge in a feast at the local restaurants. The tour includes a visit to the town of Castelgandolfo, located on the shores of the volcanic Lake Albano. He purchased a plot of land, reshaped the slopes, and built an underground canal to supply water to the fountains. The difference in elevation creates natural pressure in the fountains, as was done at Peterhof. The old monastery was converted into a villa. Work continued until 1572, when the cardinal died. Embellishment of the villa continued under his heirs. The villa soon became famous and influenced garden art in Europe, including the creators of the parks at Versailles and Vaux-le-Vicomte. From the 18th century, the villa fell into disrepair, but was saved in the second half of the 19th century by Cardinal Gustav von Hohenlohe. In 1920, the villa became state property.<br \/>\nThe building&#039;s design is very simple, and the original murals remain. The estate&#039;s main attraction is, of course, the garden. The tree-lined slopes are dotted with numerous fountains, which are pointless to describe; it&#039;s best to see for yourself (you can start with photos - www.flickr.com\/photos\/travelalone\/sets). Most of the fountains operate constantly, but two have a schedule: the water organ operates at 10:30 a.m. (and then every two hours), and the Civet Fountain operates at 10:00 a.m. (then every two hours).<\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/viaggidoro.com\/en\/zagorodnie-yekskursii-po-italii\/\">Villa Gregoriana<\/a>\u00a0(Villa Gregoriana)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-828\" src=\"https:\/\/viaggidoro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/istockphoto-1022769456-612x612-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1173\" height=\"782\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viaggidoro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/istockphoto-1022769456-612x612-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/viaggidoro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/istockphoto-1022769456-612x612-1-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/viaggidoro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/istockphoto-1022769456-612x612-1-219x146.jpg 219w, https:\/\/viaggidoro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/istockphoto-1022769456-612x612-1-50x33.jpg 50w, https:\/\/viaggidoro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/istockphoto-1022769456-612x612-1-113x75.jpg 113w, https:\/\/viaggidoro.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/istockphoto-1022769456-612x612-1.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1173px) 100vw, 1173px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The park was created by Pope Gregory XVI after the Aniene River overflowed its banks and swept away houses in the old city. The river was diverted into a tunnel, and a waterfall was installed at the end of the tunnel.<br \/>\nRomantic natural surroundings, waterfalls and caves, a quiet location, and a small area\u2014this villa is highly recommended for a relaxing getaway; it ranks first or second in our memories of our Italian vacation. It&#039;s worth buying cheese and wine beforehand (if you&#039;re leaving from the train, there&#039;s a supermarket 100 meters before the intersection where the villa is, closed from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM) and enjoying lunch at this villa overlooking the waterfall. Emperor Hadrian built the villa as a summer residence from 118 to 134. He governed the empire from here during the final years of his life. However, his successors rarely used the villa. Excavations began in the 16th century, when Cardinal Ippolito d&#039;Este removed valuable statues from the villa to his villa in Tivoli and used its marble columns. Around 300 statues, including the Discobolus, Diana of Versailles, and others, are now housed in various museums around the world.<br \/>\nThe complex consists of more than 30 buildings, a significant portion of which has not yet been excavated. It included palaces, several baths, a theater, libraries, and quarters for courtiers and slaves. Hadrian was passionate about art and architecture, wrote poetry in Greek and Latin, and traveled extensively throughout the Roman provinces. His favorite places were reproduced in the villa&#039;s architecture, but only a few can be reliably identified in the surviving ruins. The area is very large, with many attractive ruins and stunning ancient olive trees. They were likely planted during the emperor&#039;s reign, as olive trees live for several thousand years.
