It extends 25 km from\u00a0Ponte Gardena<\/b>\u00a0(471 m) to the massifGruppo Di Sella<\/b>\u00a0(3151 m) and through passes\u00a0Passo Sela<\/b>\u00a0(2240 m) and\u00a0Passo Gardena<\/b>\u00a0(2137m) connects with neighboring valleys -\u00a0Val Badia<\/b>\u00a0And\u00a0Val Di Fassa<\/b>. Three of the most famous in\u00a0Dolomites\u00a0<\/b>ski resorts -\u00a0Ortisei\u00a0<\/b>(St. Ulrich),\u00a0San Cristina<\/b>,\u00a0Selva<\/b>\u00a0(Wolkenstein).<\/p>\n

Ortisei<\/b>\u00a0(or\u00a0St. Ulrich<\/b>) is located at an altitude of 1236 m - the main village\u00a0Val Gardena<\/b>, rich in tradition, a leading tourist destination in both winter and summer. Selva Gardena<\/b>\u00a0(or Wolkenstein). The village is located at an altitude of 1563 m. It is one of the leading tourist and ski resorts in\u00a0Alps\u00a0<\/b>and is located right on the famous "ski route<\/b>\u00bb\u00a0Village of Ronda<\/b>This place is ideal for both winter holidays and skiing, as well as summer vacations, such as mountaineering, climbing, and hiking. Superbly located on the sunny side of the valley, the village is framed by the peaks of the Sella and Sassolungo mountains.<\/p>\n

Here you'll find the longest pistes, the largest elevation changes, and excellent piste maintenance. The resort's largest village is\u00a0Selva Gardena<\/b>This is a convenient starting point for multi-hour ski trips to neighboring regions. One of the ski lifts leads to the Val di Fassa region, the other to Alta Badia. After skiing, you can enjoy around 80 restaurants, bars, cafes, two discos, a sauna, a fitness center, concerts, a public indoor pool, an indoor skating rink, tennis courts, a paragliding school, and a mountaineering school.<\/p>\n

Languages and names in\u00a0Val Gardena<\/b><\/p>\n

The local population is absolutely fluent in three languages: Italian is the official language, German is the second official language in the region.\u00a0South Tyrol<\/b>\u00a0(Alto Adige), Ladin is the native language of the local population. So, it's quite official - all populated areas and topographic names inVal Gardena<\/b>\u00a0have two (or even three) names. Example:Ortisei\u00a0<\/b>- in Italian\u00a0Ortisei<\/b>, in German\u00a0St. Ulrich<\/b>, in Ladin Urtij\u0451i. Most locals, especially those who work directly with tourists, also speak good English.
\nLadin is a Romance language spoken by only about 25,000 people. Besides the indigenous populationVal Gardena<\/b>, also spoken in neighboring valleys. This language is not understood by Italians, Germans, or Austrians. Furthermore, in each valley, the "local" Ladins speak their own dialect of Ladin. So, if a situation arises where local residents don't want their conversation understood by outsiders, they easily switch to their native language.<\/p>\n

The 1956 Winter Olympics, which took place in Cortina d'Ampezzo, and the 1970 Alpine Skiing World Championships in Val Gardena certainly contributed to the rapid development of the region\u00a0Dolomiti Superski<\/b>in general and resorts\u00a0Val Gardena\u00a0<\/b>in particular. The tradition took hold, and since then, the region has hosted the annual Alpine Skiing World Cup stages for men and women.
