When its specialists assessed the capabilities of world-renowned companies, the following factors were taken into account: net profit, average revenue from each client, marketing and advertising costs, and others.<\/p>\n

\u201cFerrari is like a beautiful woman.<\/b> "You seek her, you crave her, you see her\u2014and she amazes you. Then you go to a restaurant with her, you talk, you spend the evening together, and that's when she might disappoint you. But a Ferrari will never disappoint you," says Ferrari President and Chairman Luca di Montezemolo, unveiling the new LaFerrari supercar. A large-scale presentation was held for the occasion in Maranello, home of the Ferrari factory. As for the car itself\u2014this is the third supercar since Luca di Montezemolo took over the company (after the F50 and Enzo), and the first hybrid produced at the Maranello factory\u2014all 499 units that will be produced have already been sold, which is hardly surprising. But the main thing is that it was a chance to visit the Ferrari factory, which doesn't happen every day.<\/p>\n

Luca di Montezemolo isn't just a key figure in the Italian automotive industry, nor is he simply one of the country's top executives, having overseen everything under the sun, including the FIFA World Cup. Marco, the owner of the apartment I'm renting in Bologna, taking a short vacation after Maranello, looks at me with respect when he hears I'm attending the Ferrari press conference and says, "Signor di Montezemolo is a very important person here in Italy." His full name is Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, a member of the famous House of Savoy, which reigned until the end of World War II. This makes him a relative of King Victor Emmanuel II, the unifier of Italy, whose name is given to the central street or square in literally every Italian city. Luca di Montezemolo is a true jetsetter and playboy, with all the trappings: sports cars, racing, numerous affairs, and four marriages (that's where all that old-school rhetoric about women and cars comes from). He didn't waste his life, however, but rather built one of the most impressive careers in modern management. He started at Ferrari in 1973 as an assistant to Enzo Ferrari himself, and in 1991, at the suggestion of Giovanni Agnelli, he became president of Ferrari. And now, at 65, he still looks impeccable\u2014like every Ferrari and like the Ferrari factory itself. The new La Ferrari supercar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This factory isn't just the center of Maranello ("Maranello means Ferrari, and Ferrari means Maranello," as Signor Montezemolo says); it's one of the main industrial centers of Emilia-Romagna and all of Italy. It looks like a cross between an idealized, wealthy suburb and a city of the future, with futuristic towers, glass structures, and a wind tunnel. As you approach it, at the roundabout, you first see a prancing silver horse, and then you hear a steady hum, instantly recognizable even to those unfamiliar with the luxury automotive industry\u2014the sound of Ferrari engines undergoing track testing.<\/p>\n

Factory Ferrari<\/strong> The plant is designated a green factory\u2014its entire grounds are planted with a wide variety of trees, surrounded by flowerbeds, benches, and gazebos where workers eat lunch and drink coffee. And when, for example, a transporter carrying the shells of future Ferraris appears in the midst of this idyll, it creates an almost surreal feeling. There's also greenery inside the factory buildings\u2014which, incidentally, were built by some of the most prominent figures in modern architecture, including Jean Nouvel. "It seems like there's nothing special here, just simple rectangular volumes," says one of the plant's managers, "but in fact, the most modern, environmentally friendly materials and technologies have been used." Perhaps that's why everything here looks like a huge, perfectly planned and organized high-tech loft with designer landscaping and an installation in the form of a conveyor belt stretching into the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A separate building houses the Atelier division, which deals with the personalization of your future car. Ferrari<\/strong> There are three levels of customization. The first, the most basic, is simple personalization: you can choose, for example, the type and color of the seats and steering wheel, and, by the way, they can even have your name on them\u2014but, as the employees say, such a car will be harder to sell later. The second, Tailor-Made, can fulfill all customer requests regarding all exterior and interior details, their colors and materials, and there are three collections: Scuderia (sporty style), Classica (everything is clear), and Inedita (innovative design). Each client works with a stylist, who explains everything and develops a concept. And there are some things they won't do even for the considerable price of such customization: "We never use wild color combinations, like pink and green." The most striking example of a personalized car is Lappo Elkann's famous Ferrari California in matte blue with a gray leather and denim interior. However, the factory emphasizes that this is a special case, as Lappo developed the design entirely himself. However, none of this applies to the mechanics\u2014you can't change engine power or any other engineering parameters. If you want to customize the body, that's the third, highest level of customization, One Off, and there are only a handful of such cars in the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the most magical place in the entire factory isn't even the design studio, it's the Classic department, where anyone with even the slightest appreciation for beauty experiences a certain awe. In peace and quiet, among light-colored walls, workers in this department disassemble and reassemble old car engines, crawling around them on their knees with an arsenal of various aerosols and cans, bringing these rarities\u2014of which there are almost as many here as in the Ferrari Museum itself\u2014to perfection. If you happen to own a unique Ferrari, say, a 1968, it will be restored and maintained here, using authentic components and materials. Only then will it retain its collector's status. Currently, 35 cars are being worked on here. "This one," says the department manager, answering a question about prices and pointing to a red racing car with the number "14" on the side, "costs about 10 million euros." A great opportunity for anyone who managed to become one of the 499 lucky owners of a LaFerrari, paying over a million euros for it \u2013 in 30-40 years it will be worth much, much more.<\/span><\/p>\n
