Historians believe the founder was Jason, son of Odysseus, while others suggest a shepherd tending his sheep nearby... I wonder when shepherds began building cities? In short, the city is ancient. The Samnites called Benevento Maloentho, and the Romans believed the name Maloenthos derives from the words "malum" and "eventum," meaning "place of bad events" in Latin, or Neschastyinsk. In the 3rd century BC, it surrendered to the Romans and was renamed Beneventum, meaning "place of good events" (almost like Lugansk's Schastye), so as to "avoid bringing disaster." But disaster arrived in the form of the Gothic leader Totila: he destroyed Benevento and ordered the city walls razed to the ground. From 576 to 773, Benevento belonged to the Lombards. It was then that the expression "Beneventani witches" originated. According to legend, the goddess of the moon was worshiped here from ancient times, with female priestesses performing magical rituals, dancing in the moonlight around a sacred tree. Many were burned at the stake\u2014Bishop Barbato was dedicated to eradicating heresy in Benevento and the surrounding area: it was here that the Inquisition opened the most witchcraft cases. Despite the bishop's efforts, even today Benevento is considered home to the most powerful witches. A liqueur, Strega (Witch Liqueur), remains a memory of those ancient times. The Lombards were succeeded by the Byzantines, and in the 11th century, they were driven out by the Normans, then the city became part of the papal dominions\u2014the Holy See ruled for nearly seven centuries. In 1806, Napoleon granted Benevento to Minister Talleyrand, who never visited his "kingdom." That's about it. Of course, that's not all we know about Benevento. Come and see for yourself. Breakfast.\u00a0Tour of the Abbey Palace of Loreto in Mercogliano<\/b>The Sanctuary of Montevergine (Santuario di Montevergine) is located on Mount Avella. The temple is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. According to legend, construction began around 700. From 1124, monks of the Benedictine order lived in the Sanctuary. The entire complex consists of a church, a basilica (1961), a monastery, and a guest house. During World War II, the monks of the Santuario di Montevergine guarded the Holy Shroud of Turin, protecting it from the Nazis. The Palazzo of the Abbey of Loreto, a sumptuous octagonal Baroque building (late 18th century), was built nearby on the hill. The palazzo replaced the Santuario (Sanctuary) destroyed during the earthquake of 1732 and became the winter residence of the monks of Montevergine. Currently, the palazzo houses a cultural center and is home to seven monks. The courtyard is adorned with a fountain. Classical music concerts are held in the summer, and one of the palace's halls is open for concerts in the winter. The monastery's pharmacy remains in the building, and the library and archives are open to the public. This daring project of the Neapolitan Bourbons\u2014from Charles III to his son Ferdinand III\u2014put even Versailles to shame. Built in the 18th century, the palace was considered one of the largest, if not the largest, in Europe, boasting 1,200 rooms!\u00a0Plus an English park<\/b>Even a cursory tour of the palace complex would take half a day. Just take a stroll along the main alley, adorned with marvelous fountains and pools, several times longer than the one in Versailles! Alas! Not a single guidebook in our native language devotes a single line to this stunning place! And, as a result, few of our tourists visit the palace and park complex in Caserta. But it's worth it! Nestled on the hill next to the grand palace is Old Caserta, or Casertavecchia. It has always been here, but without the palace, Caserta would be forgotten. When you can't bear to look at the clusters of stucco and Baroque curlicues of the palace, switch to the stone pavements and Lombard churches of Old Caserta: the Monastery of Sant'Augustino, within whose walls there is a cultural center and several museums; The Duomo with its ancient chapel of St. John the Baptist is impressive. In a few hours of exploring Pompeii, you'll admire the architecture, be horrified by the martyrdom of its inhabitants, and, after leaving your guide, get lost among the ancient streets. Breakfast. Holy day or\u00a0for an extra fee, an excursion to Paestum and Salerno<\/b>Departure to Paestum (98 km). A tour of Paestum\u2014golden temples on a golden steppe\u2014is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: three temples remain, two of which are older than the Parthenon. Paestum transports tourists to another dimension, where they are swept out of the flow of time. Antiquity surrounds on all sides, while the modern world timidly hovers behind the fence, holding its breath. Paestum was founded by the Sybarites (Sybaris was located in neighboring Calabria), and it became a monument to one of the most ambitious business projects: the Sybarites connected the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas by land, earning a living by ferrying goods from Sybaris to Paestum. The sea route around the toe of the dangerous Strait of Messina between Scylla and Charybdis was a long, laborious, and risky undertaking. Having snatched the sea god's potential prey, the cautious Sybarites decided not to quarrel with him\u2014the city at the route's westernmost point was named Poseidonia (shortened to Paestum). Paestum outlived its parent city, Sybaris, by almost a thousand years, supporting Rome in its war with Carthage\u2014the ruins of Roman buildings are included with the walk. The sea receded and malaria arrived, the inhabitants climbed the mountains, but Robert Guiscard and the Normans descended and hauled columns to the cathedral in Salerno... In the residential areas, there were mosaics and running water in every house, and the city walls stretched for 5 km. We'll search for the "twice-yearly blooming" Paestum roses that Ovid Horace so admired. Departure to\u00a0Salerno<\/b>\u00a0(45 km).\u00a0A stop for a mozzarella tasting and lunch is available at an additional cost. Salerno Tour\u00a0<\/b>\u2014 a symbiosis of Naples and Sorrento. The city isn't as cloyingly resort-like as Sorrento, and not as noisy a port as Naples. Fewer tourists, less showiness, everything is authentic: green parks, a port, a road dividing the city, old and new buildings\u2014all together and separate from each other. At the entrance, there's a port with a bunch of dry cargo ships, cranes, and cruise ships, and a minute later, turn and find yourself on a medieval cobblestone street. To the right is a wide avenue where modern glass and concrete buildings blend with 18th-19th-century classicism. A couple of minutes further right and through a park, you emerge onto a promenade: on one side are beaches, on the other, restaurants and shops. Turn left and stop: on foot\u2014the local Arbat. A pedestrian street with a bunch of shopping centers. Return to the hotel.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nSanta Claus and Bari<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

Breakfast. Holy day or\u00a0For an extra fee, a tour of Bari with a liturgy in the Church of St. Nicholas<\/b>Old Bari is good, oh so good! In fact, it's stunningly good! And if anyone disagrees with this (and they have every right to, by the way), they're probably just not a fan of this architectural "genre." The city is difficult to compare with anything else. A synthesis of the Middle Ages of various countries. No longer West, but not yet East. An Arab medina built in the European style. The Muslim quarter of Jerusalem in Europe. The Romans, who invaded in the 4th century BC, named the city Barium, made it a municipality, and the population received the rights of Roman citizenship and self-government. But even in Roman times, this was where the Empire ended. Here, in Brundisium (now Brindisi), was the end of the Appian Way\u2014the queen of all roads. And with the road, the Empire ended. During the turbulent era of wars for the Holy Land, Apulia was conquered by the Normans.
\nThe 11th century marked the end of the noble Scandinavian terror. The first Normans appeared, seemingly by chance. It's even said that 40-60 knights were pilgrims. Ah, well-armed pilgrims, arriving at Santa Claus's New Year's party to collect gifts! They crossed themselves and immediately did what the condottieri would do five hundred years later \u2013 they hired themselves out as guards, but remained as masters: they drove the Byzantines out of Apulia and Campania, gave the Lombards a beating in Brutia (now Calabria), and, finally, drove the Arabs out of Sicily. In fact, if it weren't for them, Sicily would be speaking Arabic today. A hundred years later, Roger II united the Norman lands into the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Then Henry IV of Hohenstaufen married a Sicilian heiress and left everything to his son, Frederick II. And he was the only one to take on the task. He built castles in Apulia, and his reign was apparently its second golden age. Alas, he quarreled with the Pope, died in 1250, and the crown of the Two Sicilies passed to the Angevins, who then passed it on to the Spaniards in 1503. Then came the Austrians, followed by Charles I of Bourbon in 1734. Then Italy was united. In fact, after Frederick II (Federico Secondo in Italian), the lands became a remote province. For the rulers, it was a marginal and uninteresting region, and, fearing secession, they eradicated municipal self-government at every turn. Had the cities of Apulia been free, they would have been able to capitalize on their situation. European trade with the East would have flowed through them\u2014the Maghreb and Egypt were just a stone's throw away! And there would have been a surge in art, as in the north. And southern Italians would not have been considered ignorant and savage peasants. Although... No one has rebuilt the marvelous Romanesque basilicas into ponderous Baroque. The castles, once impressive nuclear reactors, haven't been transformed into meaningless and opulent palaces. Call us retrograde, but it seems more interesting and beautiful as is. The simple lines of the Apulian castles seem reminiscent of functionalism. However, the beauty of functionalism is not very clear, while the castles of Federico-Friedrich are quite charming. The same, admittedly, applies to Baroque. Everything is fine and ostentatious, but the heart belongs to the Gothic and Romanesque styles. That's where elegance lies! Incidentally, the Romanesque style has almost completely died out, and Apulia has become a kind of nature reserve, where we find archaic pre-Gothic and pre-Renaissance churches and castles. It's ironic how the region's poverty has accomplished what the preservationists of historical heritage could not. And you say \u2013 UNESCO! UNESCO! Bari's biggest draw is the relics of St. Nicholas. They were brought from Myra in Lycia. Naturally, pilgrimages began. After all, St. Nicholas is one of the most powerful and illustrious saints. He is the patron saint of trade and travelers, sailors and children. It was largely thanks to pilgrimages, not trade, that Bari survived throughout the Middle Ages. Yes, thanks to Father Frost!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\nThe Final Tarantella<\/b><\/p>\n<\/td>\n

Although it feigns calm and docile now, it once struck terror into the surrounding area. Vesuvius's last eruption occurred in 1944. The most famous eruption, on August 24, 79 AD, buried the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae under heaps of ash and lava. From the volcano's summit, the fiery lava flows can be seen: two black rivers cut through the green forest. Witnesses of the tragedy are forever buried in the "Garden of the Fugitives" in Pompeii. A tragic sight is the 13 casts of Vesuvius' victims, who died from lava and suffocation by volcanic sulfur gases. For a tour of the volcano and its ruins, wear comfortable shoes\u2014don't even think about wearing heels. And then you will finally understand that the merciless Vesuvius, on a summer's day, August 24, 74 AD, destroyed a civilization that existed a thousand years ago. Rome is long since destroyed, no one remembers the emperors, but in Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae, everything remains as before.
