In 1164, Emperor Frederick I granted Treviso the status of a free city. In 1389, Treviso became a vassal of Venice, and in 1509, construction of the city walls began, making the city an outpost defending Venice from invasions from the north. The walls remain to this day and delimit the pedestrian area of the old town. The city suffered from American air raids during World War II, destroying many buildings and killing thousands of residents. The city's modern history and the source of its prosperity is the Benetton empire, of which Treviso is considered its "capital." |
